Students suspended and sent back for wearing Hijab in Karnataka

Six students were suspended and twelve others were sent back for wearing a Hijab in Uppinangadi Government Pre-University College, Karnataka. The suspended students wore a Hijab despite several warnings. The girls were suspended on Wednesday after the Principal held meeting with the faculty members. After the suspension, 12 other students wore hijabs to the college on Thursday (today) and the other section of students wore saffron shawls in their protest and demanded that the students wearing hijabs should not be allowed to enter the class.

The management did not allow both the hijab and saffron shawl-wearing students to attend the classes.

Some journalists who were there to cover the hijab story were reportedly restricted, their cameras were snatched and a couple of their footage was deleted by some “miscreants”.

This issue at the University College in Mangalore started last week and continued to persist as few students came to the college wearing headscarf and were not allowed to enter the class.

The Karnataka High Court on the 15th of March had dismissed an appeal filed by a group of Muslim students, requesting students to wear a Hijab inside the classroom. The three-judge bench of the court noted that the prescription of school uniforms is only a reasonable restriction, to which the students cannot object to. Following the orders of the High Court, the Department of Pre-University Education has made uniforms prescribed by the College compulsory for the students. It is also said that in case no uniform is prescribed by the management, students must wear dresses that maintain equality and unity, and which do not disturb public order”.
