Google Suspended an engineer who disclosed confidential details.
Google suspended a senior software engineer named Blake Lemoine for revealing certain confidential details of a chatbot that is powered by artificial intelligence. Artificial Intelligence (AI) is the simulation of human intelligence processes by machines, especially computer systems.
Blake Lemoine was put on paid administrative leave after he took public his concern that the chatbot known as Language Model for Dialogue Applications has achieved sentence. It all started when Lemoine was asked to figure out whether the AI uses any discriminatory or hate speech. However, he discovered that the AI is sentient which means someone who can express their thoughts and feelings. As Lemoine stated in the Medium post, he suggests that scientists and engineers should take consent from Google and certain chat boxes before conducting experiments.
He revealed his suspension on the 6th of June and discussed his concerns about LaMDA’s possible sentence with the Washington Post. The guilty said that he investigated ethics with the people outside the company to get proof to shoot them up to the management. According to the report, Lemoine was working as an engineer and not as an ethicist, in simple words he did not have the expertise or the skill to judge if the AI is sentient or not.
