Mirabai Chanu's Road to Paris 2024: Overcoming Injury and Selective Competitions

A weightlifting champion from India has had an inspiring journey filled with dedication, hard work, and remarkable success. Mirabai Chanu was born on 8 August 1994 in Nongpok Kakching about 30 km away from Imphal city, Manipur to a Meitei family, a warrior clan of that region. She discovered her passion for weightlifting at a young age.

After a hip injury sidelined her for five months following the Hangzhou Asian Games 2023, Mirabai Chanu faced one of her toughest challenges yet. With the support of her American physio and coach Vijay Sharma, she managed her injury and recovery meticulously.

Looking ahead to Paris 2024, Mirabai strategically selected her competitions. In 2024, she participated in just one event, the World Cup, where she finished 12th with a combined lift of 184 kilograms. Despite this modest finish, it secured her a spot in the Paris Olympics. Mirabai's journey exemplifies resilience and determination in the face of adversity, setting the stage for an inspiring performance in Paris.

Mirabai's journey to success has been a testament to her resilience and determination. She has faced many challenges along the way but has never given up on her dreams. With the unwavering support of her family, especially her mother, she has overcome obstacles and emerged as one of India's most promising athletes.

Mirabai's achievements in weightlifting are numerous and impressive.

  • Gold medal at the 2017 World Weightlifting Championships in Anaheim, United States, in the 48kg category.
  • Silver medal at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics in the 49kg category, becoming the first Indian weightlifter to win an Olympic medal in over two decades.
  • Gold medal at the 2018 Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast, Australia, in the 48kg category, setting a new Commonwealth Games record.
  • Gold medal at the 2019 Commonwealth Championships in Apia, Samoa, in the 49kg category.
  • Bronze medal at the 2021 Asian Championships in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, in the 49kg category.

Mirabai's dedication to her sport and her ability to overcome challenges make her a role model for aspiring athletes. Her journey from a small town in Manipur to the global stage is a testament to the power of perseverance and hard work. Mirabai Chanu's success has not only brought glory to India but has also inspired a new generation of weightlifters to dream big and chase their goals relentlessly.
