UGC NET Exam 2024 have been Cancelled

The Education Ministry announced on June 19 that the UGC-NET exam had been cancelled due to concerns from the Ministry of Home Affairs about the exam's integrity. The UGC-NET, conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA), is held twice a year to determine eligibility for Assistant Professor positions, Junior Research Fellowships, and PhD admissions. This cancellation comes amid controversies over irregularities in the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) for medical courses.

The exams were held in two shifts on June 18 across various cities. The Ministry of Education posted on the social media platform X, emphasising its commitment to maintaining the sanctity of exams and protecting student interests. They stated that the UGC-NET June 2024 exam was cancelled based on inputs from the Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre (I4C), which indicated possible exam integrity issues.

In a statement released late Wednesday night on 19th June, the Ministry of Education announced that a new examination will be organized, with further details to be provided later. Additionally, the case is being transferred to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) for a comprehensive investigation.

In response, students, including those from Jawaharlal Nehru University, announced protests in front of the Ministry, demanding the resignation of the Education Minister and the UGC Chairperson, as well as the scrapping of the NTA and NEET. Over the past month, students have been protesting alleged irregularities in the NEET exam, calling for a retest.

Following the UGC-NET cancellation announcement, the Opposition questioned why NEET had not been cancelled. Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge called the UGC-NET cancellation a victory for students. He pointed out that despite earlier denials from the Education Minister about paper leaks in NEET, there have been arrests related to education scams in Bihar, Gujarat, and Haryana, and questioned when the NEET exam would be cancelled.
