Let’s know about the symptoms of new COVID variant- Omicron

On 26 November 2021, WHO designated variant B.1.1.529 a variant of concern named Omicron. This new variant was first found in South Africa. This variant shows several mutations that might have various impacts on the human body. One important fact that is not clear till now is whether this new variant is easily transferred from one person to another like the other variants of COVID-19, including delta.

Being classified as the variant of concern, Omicron has shown an increase in transmissibility, increase in virulence and decrease in effectiveness in diagnostics and vaccines. It has 30 mutations in the spike protein, which is responsible for the virus’s entry into human cells.

Doctors in South Africa have seen some symptoms among the people infected with Omicron, the variant of COVID-19. A few of the symptoms are listed below-

1. Omicron infected patients have complained of “scratchy throat”

Infected patients are complaining about a scratchy rather than sore throat.

2. Patients show extreme tiredness, which is not limited to any age group

Infected patients are suffering extreme tiredness, body aches, and pains with a bit of a headache. But these symptoms are not limited to any particular age group.

3. There is no major drop in oxygen saturation level

Patients infected with Omicron had no major drop in oxygen levels. Delta infections, by comparison,      caused elevated pulse rates, resulting in low oxygen levels.

4. There is no loss of taste or smell among the patients infected with the Omicron variant

Patients infected with the Omicron strain have not reported a loss of taste or smell, which are known symptoms in patients infected with other strains.

5. Most of the patients have recovered without hospitalization

Most patients of Omicron strain have recovered without hospitalization, say doctors.
