Kanchanjunga Express: West Bengal train Accident
A very tragic accident occurred today, the train was traveling from Agartala to Sealdah, West Bengal, and an unfortunate accident happened around 9 am, while the train was on its route. 15 people including the driver died and at least 60 people were injured train collided with a goods train near New Jalpaiguri Station in West Bengal.
On Monday, PM Narendra Modi announced an ex-gratia payment of 2 lakh from The Prime Minister's National Relief Fund (PMNRF), for the families of each person who died in the railway accident. And injured will get 50,000 from the relief fund each.
What is PMNRF?
It is mainly used to provide immediate help to families of people killed in natural disasters like floods, cyclones, and earthquakes, as well as victims of major accidents and riots. It also helps cover some medical costs for treatments like heart surgeries, kidney transplants, cancer treatment, and acid attack recovery. The fund is made up entirely of public donations and does not receive any money from the government budget.
Enhanced Ex-Gratia Compensation and Response to the Train Accident:
- Chief Minister's Visit:
Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee will visit the accident site later this evening to assess the situation and offer support.
- Enhanced Ex-Gratia Compensation:
₹10 Lakh: Provided in case of death.
₹2.5 Lakh: Provided for grievous injuries.
₹50,000: Provided for minor injuries.
- Rescue Efforts:
Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw and Minister of State for Railways Ravneet Singh Bittu confirmed that coordinated rescue efforts are ongoing.
The Chief Minister emphasized ongoing coordination with the Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) and central authorities to manage the situation effectively. The Railways, National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) are working together. The injured are being transported to hospitals for treatment. Senior officials are present at the site to oversee and supervise rescue and relief operations.
- Presidential Condolences:
President Droupadi Murmu expressed her condolences for the loss of lives in the train accident. In a post on X (formerly Twitter), President Murmu extended her prayers to the bereaved families. She wished for the quick recovery of the injured and the success of the ongoing rescue efforts.
