What is operation blue star?
On this day today operation blue star happened in 1984. exactly 37 year years before. The Indian Army carried out an attack. The Sikh leader Jarnail singh Bhindranwale and most of their followers were killed in the operation. around 100 militants who were martyrs. The whole operation was executed by prime minister Indira Gandhi. Between June 1 to June 8, 1984. The Amritsar golden temple was severely destructed in the incident. The movement took birth after Khalistan in India which aimed to make a separate and independent state of Sikhs. This movement was known to be the biggest internal security operation to date.
Jarnail singh was the reason behind of start of operation blue star. As a leader, he influenced many Sikh youths over the Akal Takht complex in Amritsar golden temple. In 1983 he gained many followers of supporters for the movement. They entered with armed militants and set a base inside the temple. The havoc caused many precious lives and most were the elders including men and women. As per the official report at least, 100 jawans and 492 civilians were killed in that whole incident. During the operation, a Sikh holy book installed at the temple was targeted in the firing. The operation turned out to be successful as the Indian army managed to turn down Bhindranwale along with his supporters inside the temple and some of them surrendered themselves.
Aftermath of the operation blue star
The aftermath of the operation was much worse than the real operation. Military commandments continuously firing gurudwaras across Punjab. In this operation, there were more people who died during and after the operation. Five months later, Indira Gandhi was assassinated by her two bodyguards in October 1984 as an act of revenge on operation blue star.
