From breaking mirrors to hanging lemons and chilies, India is a country of diverse cultures and traditions, as well as a lot of superstitions. Every day, we encounter them everywhere. A black cat crosses our path and like a dead statue, we stop and wait for someone to pass first. The best part about the country is that we continue to practice them even if we know nothing is going to happen. Incredible India? Isn’t it?

Let’s examine some Indian superstitions and the beliefs that underline them.

If a black cat crosses your path, it’s a bad omen

Just because they are black cats? Not just in India but a popular belief in the west too. The origin of this superstition has come from the Egyptians who believed that black cats were evil creatures and they bring bad luck. In India, the black color is generally associated with Lord Shani. It is advised to let someone else pass before you if a black cat crosses your path. The first individual will experience all the bad luck in this way, but you won’t.
